SVAM - Scuola Volontari dell'Aeronautica Militare

SVAM (Scuola Volontari dell’Aeronautica Militare) in Taranto is the Italian Air Force Volunteer School, the institute dedicated to the initial military training of enlisted volunteers. Located in the historic seaplane base on the Mar Piccolo, traditionally associated with the name of Luigi Bologna, it prepares new personnel for service in Air Force units through courses in military discipline, ethics, regulations, physical training, drill, security, basic operational procedures and the values of the Armed Forces. Its current functional role is to transform civilian recruits into trained Air Force volunteers, providing the common foundation required before they move on to specialist training or operational assignments. The school also represents an important point of contact between the Air Force and the city of Taranto, a place with a strong naval and aeronautical identity. Historically, the site is linked to the early development of Italian military aviation and seaplane operations in southern Italy, particularly during the twentieth century, when Taranto was a strategic base in the Mediterranean.
