The Grand Mother of God Co-Cathedral is one of the most iconic symbols of modern Taranto, representing a perfect blend of contemporary architecture and spirituality. Designed by architect Gio Ponti and inaugurated in 1970, the co-cathedral was born within the context of the urban development of the Borgo Nuovo, offering a new religious reference point for the city.
The building stands out for its dramatic and innovative form: the large perforated facade, characterized by geometric openings, allows light to filter inside, creating suggestive plays of light. This interplay between light and space is one of the most significant elements of the work, designed to express a sense of openness and transcendence.
Inside, the environment is essential yet solemn, designed to favor the contemplation and participation of the faithful. The co-cathedral complements the Cathedral of San Cataldo in its liturgical function, reflecting the city's transition towards a more modern and articulated dimension.
Today, it represents not only a place of worship but also a point of architectural and cultural interest, capable of narrating an important phase of Taranto's urban and identity history.
